Tommy Hunsicker is Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Early in his first season as Wilson’s quarterback the game seemed to be going 100 mph for Tommy Hunsicker.

The junior grew into the position, was able to go through his progressions better and better and eventually the game slowed down for him. In his final game, in the district playoffs against eventual Class 6A champ Harrisburg, he threw for a career-high 223 yards and pair of touchdowns.

He entered his senior season as a poised quarterback, able to make all the plays, and showed that Friday in the Bulldogs’ home opener against Central Dauphin.

Hunsicker threw for a career-high 262 yards and ran for the go-ahead touchdown in overtime, earning Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week for the first time.

“He’s night and day (compared to this time last year),” said Wilson coach Doug Dahms. “He just has such a better grasp of the game. He’s more physical. He sees the field much better.”

He saw just about every inch of the field on his 77-yard scoring pass to Jackson Wagner in the first quarter. Hunsicker was nearly sacked twice on the play before scrambling out of the pocket, rolling to his left, then finding Wagner, who was 20 yards beyond any Central Dauphin defenders.

“(Jackson) did a good job turning around and running back to me when he saw me scramble,” Hunsicker said. “I knew he was gonna make the play.”

Hunsicker made plenty of them, with his arm and his feet. He completed 16-of-25 passes, with three touchdowns.

He also rushed 57 yards and ran 8 yards for a touchdown to put Wilson ahead 34-28 in overtime. Central Dauphin scored a touchdown and two-point conversion on its possession to win it, 36-35.

That outcome didn’t diminish Hunsicker’s play. He kept his team in it the whole way.

“Tommy’s Tommy,” said Dahms, who’s now used to seeing his quarterback make plays. “He’s running well, he’s scrambling, he’s smart. He made some good throws. We’re gonna ride him for quite a while.”

Hunsicker did all of that Friday without his No. 1 receiver, Edison Case, who suffered a dislocated elbow in the preseason and has yet to play. He is expected to return within the next week or so.

Through two games, Hunsicker has completed 30-of-55 passes for 377 yards and three TDs.

In 11 games as a junior he completed 55 percent of his passes for 1,065 yards and 11 TDs, with nine interceptions.
