Third time not a charm as Mounts as fall to Mennonite again in Class 2A final

(This story will be updated later tonight with a full box score, additional details, and postgame reaction.)

HERSHEY — It was the same story for Antietam in the District 3 Class 2A championship game Tuesday at Giant Center: A loss to Lancaster Mennonite and another silver medal.

The third-seeded Mounts (13-11) gave up the first 10 points of the second half and never were able to get back in the game, falling to the top-seeded Blazers 57-44.

It was Antietam’s third straight loss to Mennonite in a district title game.

The Mounts open the PIAA Tournament Saturday, March 11 at Christopher Dock, the District 1 champ.

Senior Javon Hollis, a starter on each of the three finalists, did his best to stave off the defeat, scoring 11 fourth-quarter points and a team-high 18 overall. He also had a team-high eight rebounds. The Mounts were just too far behind at that point; they trailed by 18 points midway through the third quarter.

The Mounts were done in by turnovers and, once again, by All-State wing Cameron Hurst. The senior and 1,000-point scorer finished with a game-high 19 points and had five assists and five rebounds. He was the Blazers’ top scorer in each of the three championships.

Sophomore Julious Williams scored 10 first-half points for Antietam but didn’t score in the second half.

The Mounts turned the ball over 19 times, including four times in the opening minutes of the second half when the Blazers (16-8) opened with a 10-0 run and jacked their lead to 37-19. Antietam got no closer than nine the rest of the way.

David Weaver, a 6-7 senior, had 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Mennonite.

The Mounts finished the first quarter on a 9-4 run, taking a 14-13 lead into the second quarter. Williams scored seven points in the run, including a 3-pointer and a buzzer-beating layup on a feed from Reyes-Rodriguez.

Five turnovers cost the Mounts in the second quarter, as they scored just two baskets and fell behind 27-19 entering halftime. Hurst began to heat up for the Blazers, scoring seven points, including a 3-pointer that started Mennonite’s 7-0 finishing run.

Williams kept the Mounts in it in the first half, with a pair of 3-pointers and 10 points. The 6-4 sophomore went 3-for-3 on 3-pointers in the semifinal win over Halifax.

Hurst scored 32 points in the 2021 district championship game, which ended Antietam’s season. He had 19 last year in a 52-46 win over the Mounts at Giant Center.
