The Fleetwood Tigers came into their second game of the season full of momentum after a strong second half in a season-opening victory against Kutztown. All of that quickly faded Thursday in a 35-7 in a non-league loss  to visiting Upper Perkiomen.

Quarterback Logan O’Donnell, a return starter, ran for a touchdown and passed for another to push the Indians to a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

It only got worse from there for the Tigers (1-1), who had constant special teams breakdowns and struggled to put anything together on offense.

Two muffed snaps on punts gave the Indians field position inside the 20, leading to scores. The Tigers also allowed a 55-yard punt return to Benjamin Sands midway through the third quarter that made it 35-0 and started the running clock.

“(A) complete mess,” Tigers coach Steve Pangburn said of the special teams plays.

The Tigers avoided a shutout when Beau Fegely scored on a 1-yard run with 3:57 remaining.

Upper Perkiomen (1-1) led 21-0 at the half as Brody Weiss scored on a 4-yard run with 21 seconds left in the second quarter.

The Indians reached the end zone on their first possession of the second half, with Braeden O’Donell scoring on a 4-yard run.

The Tigers leaned into the running game as the passing game struggled to find consistency. Fegely, coming off a 224-yard performance in a 54-34 win over Kutztown, had a positive performance as he rushed for 57 yards on 14 carries.

Senior quarterback Chase McMonagle completed 11-of-24 passes for 121 yards, with an interception.

The Tigers allowed just 216 total yards on defense but the Indians had such favorable field position they didn’t need to drive the field.

“They didn’t do a lot last week,” Pangburn said of the Indians. “They were pretty basic (on offense), but basic works when you’re playing physical.”

Upper Perkiomen lost its opener to Boyertown 20-17 in overtime.

“There are eight more football games to play” Pangburn said.  “This team was physical, but we’ve got more physical teams ahead of us, so we (need to) decide to fight.”

The win is the third straight for Upper Perkiomen in the series.
