COLUMBIA — Annville-Cleona called on running back Devon Englehart a lot. He didn’t let a single call go to voicemail.

Englehart rushed 33 times Friday night, the most by any back on either team by a landslide. But he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s part of the game, man,” Englehart said with a smile.

Englehart, who stands just 5-foot-5, was one of the hardest players to bring down all night. He also has one of the best motors in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.

The Dutchmen running back put on a show Friday night, running for 211 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-26 Section 5 victory at Columbia.

“He’s tough,” said Annville-Cleona coach Matt Gingrich of his junior running back. “He wants to be the best, he works to be the best and he will do anything to be the best. He will give us everything.”

Englehart, who scored on a 43-yard run early in the third quarter, ignited the running game for the Dutchmen. Annville-Cleona’s offense went as he did.

But for Englehart, it was more about the team than his performance.

“Our offense played phenomenal,” said Englehart. “Defense pulled it out when we needed it. Our special teams, they stepped up.”

Friday night’s L-L Section 5 game was as advertised.

The Crimson Tide were cruising early on offensive through quarterback Cameron McClair and running back Tyler Brommer.

McClair was 9-for-14 for 151 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown toss to Xzayvion Stallworth to tie it at 14-14 as time expired in the first half.

“We went into halftime with a close game,” Englehart said. “We all got fired up from that closeness. It drives us to get that win. The closeness pushes us even further than our limits, and I believe that’s what made us win that game. Every single one of us just kept going and pushing.”

Englehart’s counterpart, Brommer, also shined, running for 125 yards and three touchdowns, two of them in the second half.

Columbia wide receiver Miguel Ocasio was a big threat in the attack for the Tide, catching all four balls that were thrown his way for 81 yards.

It was a gutsy win for the Dutchmen (2-0, 4-1). Columbia (1-1, 2-3), coming off two straight wins, was confident and looked the part all night.

Columbia’s demise came at its own doing, with a fumble deep in its territory that led to a Dutchmen touchdown, along with some costly penalties.

“We beat ourselves a little bit,” said Crimson Tide coach Nate Bagley. “We kind of lost momentum a little bit there towards the end, and we just got to learn how to manage our emotions a little bit in those tough situations and do better and come out and execute.”

Annville-Cleona ground out a win that puts the Dutchmen atop L-L’s Section 5.

“You played a real tough team, and you came out of an away game with a win,” said Gingrich on his postgame message to his team. “It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t beautiful, but it got the job done.”
