Team of the Day: Twin Valley Raiders

2024 Berks football coverage

presented by UECU

The Twin Valley Raiders enter their 29th season in an unfamiliar location — on top.

They set a program record last season with 10 wins — they had never won more than seven before — and earned a championship for the first time in 16 years, sharing the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 3 title with Ephrata and Garden Spot. Along the way they earned a spot in the state Top 10 rankings for the first time.

They enter the 2024 season coming off three straight winning seasons, a first for the program, and as a favorite to win the Section 4 title.

Like most start-up football programs Twin Valley had trouble getting off the ground. It won just one game in its first season, 1996, and had back-to-back winless seasons in 1999 and 2000.

The Raiders went through a series of coaches in their early years before finding stability with co-head coaches Jerry Wilczynski and Joe Dohmson — the first, and only, co-head coaches in Berks football history.

Twin Valley finished with a winning record in their second season, 2004, and three years later won seven times and the Berks Football League Section 2 title.

Twin Valley was lifted in recent seasons by the duo of Dominic Caruso and Trey Freeman, teammates from 2018-21. Caruso finished with program records of 3,684 rushing yards and 41 touchdowns. Freeman finished with 2,250 career receiving yards, setting a Berks record. (That record was broken in 2022 by Exeter’s Joey Schlaffer.)
