Team of the Day: Muhlenberg Muhls

2025 Berks football coverage

presented by UECU

Watching the Muhlenberg Muhls play in recent seasons it’s easy to forgot they were a dominant force in Berks football for many years.

The Muhls were the Team of the 90’s in the Berks Football League, winning six league championships and completing four unbeaten runs through league play during the decade.

John Yocum’s 1992 and 1998 Muhlenberg teams were among the most dominant in league history, recording the second and third perfect regulars seasons in program history (the first came in 1972).

Yocum’s Hall of Fame coaching career included 167 victories and 10 league or section titles over 20 seasons. No other coach in the program’s 78-year history has won more than 59 games.

The Muhls were also a Berks power in the post-World War II era, winning five straight Berks Conference championships from 1947-1951. Muhlenberg was also a two-time Tri-County League champ.

Those glory days may be a distant memory to many, but former Muhls quarterback Rob Flowers stirred life back into the program last season, his first as head coach. Flowers piloted Muhlenberg to its 1998 Inter-County League championship.

The Muhls won four times last season and featured one of the state’s top running backs, Cameron Small, who rushed for a program-record 2,051 yards in 10 games, with 23 TDs. The All-State pick set a program single-game record with 346 yards vs. Exeter.

Before last season the Muhls had won just five times over the previous past six seasons. They went winless for the first time in program history in 2019 and extended that losing streak during the Covid-shortened 2020 season. The losing streak reached 26 before they beat Reading High in the 2021 season finale.

Muhlenberg has enjoyed just one winning season in the past decade.

Flowers’ teammate, Jason Reinhart, was one of the greatest backs in Inter-County League history. He set Berks records with 39 touchdowns in 1998 and 70 in his career, which saw him rush for over 3,700 yards.
