State rankings: Spartans, Raiders move up after convincing Week 1 wins

Wyomissing and Twin Valley inched up in the PennLive.com Class 4A state rankings after big wins in their season-openers.

The Spartans moved from No. 5 in the preseason to No. 3 after holding off Southern Columbia 35-21 at Wolfrum Field. Southern entered the season ranked No. 1 in Class 2A; it dropped one spot after the loss.

The Raiders moved up one spot to No. 7 after a 42-16 win at Berks Catholic.

Wilson, which opened with a 28-20 win over Cheltenham, makes its season debut in the rankings as a Team To Watchin Class 6A.

Schuylkill Valley, listed as a Team to Watch in Class 3A in the preseason rankings, was dropped after a 29-20 loss at Muhlenberg in Week 1.

LaSalle was one of the big movers after Week 1, landing at No. 5 in Class 6A after walloping No. 4 Harrisburg 45-7; the Cougars dropped out of the Top 10.

In Class 4A, No. 3 McKeesport fell 36-35 in two OTs to Lake High of Ohio, clearing the way for the Spartans to move up.

In Class 3A, No. 1 Central Valley tumbled eight spots after a 24-14 loss at Montour, which was not ranked.

In Class 2A, Troy moves up two spots to take over the No. 1 spot, vacated by Southern.

The No. 1 team in Class 1A also lost. Westinghouse lost 28-26 to Beaver, clearing the way for No. 2 Fort Cherry to move into the top spot.
