The stage is set for one of the biggest regular season games in Berks football history.
Wyomissing’s trip to Twin Valley Friday is more than just a battle for first place in Section 4 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League — it’s one of the biggest match-ups in the state.
The Raiders are ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 4A, the Spartans No. 4. That makes this an unprecedented match-up: It is the first time a top-ranked Berks team has played another state-ranked Berks opponent.
It’s also one of the few times two Berks teams meet when both are ranked in the top five in the state. The last time it happened was 2015, in the “Backyard Brawl”: Wyomissing was No. 3, Berks Catholic No. 4.
The Saints and Spartans met two other times when both were ranked in the Top 10 in the state: In 2012, when the Spartans were No. 2 and the Saints No. 9; and in 2017, when Berks Catholic was No. 3 and Wyomissing No. 7.
Twin Valley is just the third Berks team to rise to No. 1 in the PennLive.com state rankings, joining Wyomissing and Gov. Mifflin. This is the third straight week for the Raiders to land on top.
No matter which team wins Friday they’ll likely face another Top 10 team before the regular season ends. Unbeaten Lampeter-Strasburg looms at No. 7 in Class 4A; the Pioneers host Twin Valley in Week 9 and end the regular season at Wyomissing.
Wilson, in Class 6A, and Exeter, in Class 5A, remain Teams to Watch.
Elsewhere, there was only one significant change in the rankings this week: La Salle College takes over the top spot in Class 6A after edging top-ranked St. Joseph’s Prep 35-34 last week in four overtimes. The Explorers ahd been No. 2.
