Wyomissing gets Week 7 off to an early start with a visit to Daniel Boone Thursday, the Spartans’ final tune-up before their much-anticipated Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 showdown with Twin Valley on Oct. 11.
The Spartans (3-0, 6-0) are ranked No. 4 in the state in Class 4A and share first place with the Raiders (6-0) and Lampeter-Strasburg (5-1).
They will be a prohibitive favorite against the Blazers (0-3, 0-6), a team they have beaten 21 straight times. Wyomissing built a 35-0 halftime lead last year en route to a 42-6 win over Boone; Tyler Niedrowski scored a pair of touchdowns for the Spartans and recorded a safety with a sack in the end zone.
Boone’s last win in the series came in 1980, when Bob Wolfrum – the winningest coach in Berks history – was an assistant coach on the Spartans’ staff.
The teams haven’t met very often during the 2000’s; they were usually in different sections. When Boone moved from Section 3 to Section 4 for the 2024 season the Spartans became a regular roadblock on their schedule.
There are three other Lancaster-Lebanon League teams in action Thursday: Lampeter-Strasburg plays at Northern Lebanon and Penn Manor plays at Littlestown.
The big game of the week comes Friday when Exeter visits Muhlenberg in a battle of unbeatens.
The Blazers are hoping to avoid their first winless season since 1959, when they debuted at the varsity level and went 0-8.
Boone has lost eight straight games, dating to last October. After facing Wyomissing it plays at Donegal (2-4), which is much-improved over last season. It ends its season at Twin Valley.
In between the Blazers will have their best chance for a win, against Northern Lebanon (1-5), which beat Pine Grove in its season-opener but hasn’t won since. The Vikings will likely take a seven-game losing streak into their Week 9 game at Birdsboro.
