Fleetwood (0-6 , 2-7) was able to force Solanco (6-0 , 8-1) to punt on the first drive of the game. As the Tigers were looking to take the early lead, Chase McMonagle was picked off by Gabe Forren in Solanco territory.

After struggling to move the ball on the ground on their first drive, the Golden Mules turned to the deep ball as Chase Sensenig connected with Eric Koch for a 44-yard strike to take a 7-0 lead.

As the Tigers could not capitalize on a couple of Solanco penalties, they punted to Koch who then took it 70 yards to extend the lead to 14-0.

The Solanco defense was stout. It forced Fleetwood to 4=four straight three-and-outs going to the end of the first half.

Three of the ensuing possessions ended in six points for the Golden Mules. Wesley Bard ran one for 32 yards, Sensenig took one for 24 yards and with just a minute left in the half, the Sensenig-Koch connection struck again for 50 yards putting Solanco up 35-0 at the half.

The Solanco defense held the Tigers to just 44 total yards of offense in the first half, 35 of those yards came via McMonagle finding Trey McKinney for a catch-and-run.

Solanco again forced Fleetwood to punt to open the second half (fifth straight drive). Kris Burgos-Wise took the ball 66 yards on the first play of the next drive.

Burgos-Wise was not done as he rushed for a 19-yard touchdown to cap off another impressive Solanco victory.

Fleetwood was never able to establish their own running game. The Tigers longest run of the first half was just 3 yards. They were forced to throw the ball more often, playing catch up.

As senior quarterback McMonagle was able to return to game action this week, it would be a stat line to forget: 7-for-24 for just 53 yards and an interception.

The secondary of Solanco blanketed the receivers all night, so much so that there was a stretch of eight incompletions in a row by McMonagle.

Fleetwood was familiar with Solanco’s senior, star running back Johnny Garcia going into the game. They held Garcia to just 90 yards on the night and without a touchdown.

Nonetheless, Garcia and the Solanco offensive line was able to wear down the  Fleetwood defense.

Fleetwood was focused on the inside run, but that allowed Solanco to gash the Tigers time and time again on the outside.

Fleetwood would find the end zone twice as they held the ball for the majority of the fourth quarter. Junior running back Beau Fegely scored a 6-yard carry. After recovering an onside kick, junior running back Nathan Kummerer scored on a 23-yard run.

Star of the game

Solanco’s Eric Koch made the most of his two receptions Friday, totaling for 94 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a 70-yard punt return touchdown.

Key statistic

The Golden Mules had five different ballcarriers rush for 20 yards or more, showcasing their depth.

“(Our) defense played great, but we struggled to move the ball on the ground and when you do that you’re always going to struggle,” — Fleetwood coach Steve Pangburn.

Quotable

“We just missed some throws. There was some (plays to be made), tight windows. They play a really good shell coverage and we just missed some throws.” — Fleetwood coach Steve Pangburn

Quotable

“Sometimes (teams) try to take certain parts of our offense away, but then it opens up other opportunities for the other guys to get yards.” — Solanco coach Anthony Cox

Quotable

“One of our goals was to be a section champion…they deserve it. These kids have been working hard all year. They’ve been playing varsity since their sophomore years, some since [freshman year]. They took some beatings when they were younger, but now we’re able to go out there and have some success.” — Solanco coach Anthony Cox
