MIDDLEBURG — After an upset loss in week one, Hamburg bounced back with a 41-7 non-league win over Midd-West Friday night.

Dual-threat senior quarterback Tyler Shuey led the way, passing for 323 yards and four touchdowns while running for another on the ground. Just one week ago, Shuey was limited to 70 passing yards.

The Hawks (1-1) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard when Shuey found Daniel Brady open for a 76-yard touchdown connection on the first play from scrimmage.

Hamburg found the end zone three more times in the second quarter, including a memorable final play of the half when Shuey threw a 14-yard dart to Ty Werley, who then pitched the ball to Brady, who ran the ball into the end zone from the 40-yard line to give the Hawks a 27-0 lead.

While Hawks’ coach Matt Hoffert was celebrating the trick play, a player stepped on his ankle, injuring his achilles. Hoffert coached the rest of the game on crutches and was in good spirits following the contest.

The Hawks found the end zone twice more in the third quarter on a 7-yard run by Blaise Ernst and a 35-yard catch by Alexander Soto. Soto made multiple defenders miss on the way to his score, which triggered the mercy rule.

The Mustangs (0-2) cracked the scoreboard with just 33 seconds remaining on a 1-yard sneak by sophomore quarterback Mason Fultz against Hamburg’s second-team defense.

Hamburg’s defense closely resembled their mascot, ball-hawking three interceptions from the young quarterback. Owen Bentz, Ethan Horvath and Hayden Bell hauled in turnovers, two of which led to scores. The Mustangs were limited to just under 2 yards per carry, running the ball 34 times for a total of 67 yards.
