Schuylkill Valley upset by Annville-Cleona, still in running for Section 5 title (updated)

By Chris Deantonio — MikeDragoSports.com correspondent

In a matchup between two teams led by dominant running backs, Annville-Cleona took control of the game early, with long scoring drives and a four-touchdown performance from Phoenix Music.

The Dutchmen controlled the time of possession and ran all over the field on their way to a 42-10 Lancaster-Lebanon Section 5 upset of Schuylkill Valley Friday night at Leesport.

“We never try to slow the ball down,” said Annville-Cleona coach Matt Gingrich. “But we like to be dominant, we like to play physical, and have the chips fall where they may.”

The Homecoming loss ended Schuylkill Valley’s six-game winning streak. The Panthers (5-1, 6-3) can still tie for the Section 5 championship with a win next week over unbeaten Lancaster Catholic.

There was a lot at stake for the Dutchmen in the matchup, and the team knew the importance of the showdown.

“If we didn’t win, we wouldn’t have a one hundred percent chance at the (district) playoffs,” said Music. “So we wanted to come in here and take care of the game.”

The Dutchmen (4-2, 6-3) scored on their first possession, building an early lead that they held throughout.
Music scored his first touchdown on a 30-yard run. Music was one of three Dutchmen to find the end zone. They also got scores from Cael Harter and Alex Long. All six touchdowns came on the ground.
Gingrich had nothing but praise for the way they ran the ball all night.

“The cuts the backs were making — they hit all the right holes,” said Gingrich. “Rarely was there a mistake.”

Music ran for a game-high 195 yards on 28 carries and scored four touchdowns.

Harter also had a strong game carrying the ball, finishing with 88 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

Defensively, the Dutchmen forced four punts, and limited Schuylkill Valley to just 10 first downs.

Annville-Cleona controlled the game and time of possession, scoring on long drives and keeping the ball away from Schuylkill Valley running back Dom Giuffre.

Giuffre was held in check most of the game, finishing with 62 yards and a touchdown on 17 attempts. He also caught one pass for 17 yards.
