ANNVILLE — The little things hurt Schuylkill Valley on Friday night against Annville-Cleona.

The Panthers lost in the margins to the Dutchmen, falling 14-7 Friday night and ending their hopes for a share of the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 5 title.

Schuylkill Valley (4-2, 5-4) was penalized 10 times for a total of 75 yards, botched multiple special teams plays and failed to finish drives as the normally high-octane offense sputtered against the grit-and-grind Dutchmen.

“There’s stupid penalties all over the place,” Schuylkill Valley coach Bruce Harbach said. “Face mask penalties, offensive line penalties, defensive penalties. It’s one thing after another.”

A botched snap and subsequent 11-yard punt set up Annville-Cleona’s first score, a 6-yard run by Devon Englehart before halftime.

In the third quarter, a goal line stand by the Dutchmen defense set up a 97-yard option run touchdown for Jon Moran.

The Panthers also had issues with the snap on a field goal attempt in the first quarter, failing to get the kick off entirely.

“When I look at the film, I’m going to say this is one that got away from us,” Harbach said. “We very easily could have won this football game. There’s no question about it.”

The Panthers were held at arm’s length all game long. The defense got stops when needed, but the offense couldn’t convert when it counted. Schuylkill Valley was held off the scoreboard until the final two minutes when Alex Aletras connected with Alex Gehret for a 5-yard score.

The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Dutchmen (6-0, 8-1). It didn’t go the required 10 yards anyway. A player was also offsides.

“I thought it we stop them four of five times, we win the football game,” Harbach said. “We probably should have won the game. We left a touchdown there. We left a field goal. Three or four times in the red zone and we couldn’t score.”

“We had our chances and didn’t capitalize on it,” he went on. “Period.”

Englehart and Moran combined for 250 yards on the ground, both eclipsing the century mark. As a team, the Dutchmen rumbled for 315 rushing yards, grabbing just over 6 yards per carry.  Schuylkill Valley was limited to just 17 yards on the ground in the first half. The offense picked up in the second half, mostly using quarterback keepers and screen plays. Still, the Panthers failed to finish drives.
