Sam Bryant, Trenity Burdine front Reading High’s 11th Hall of Fame class

All-State picks Sam Bryant and Trenity Burdine are among eight members of the 11th class of the Reading High Athletic Hall of Fame.

The new class will be introduced during a halftime ceremony Friday at the Red Knights’ football game against Penn Manor at Shirk Stadium. The class will be formally inducted at a banquet Saturday at Kraras Banquet Hall.

Joining Bryant and Burdine are track stars Romarr Mayne and Imani Brown, baseball player Jeff Kantner, football player Dick Drexler and three-sport standouts Jared Sadlowski and Lori (Pingitore) Sherman. Also set for induction is the 1977 football team.

The inductees will be celebrated during the Hall of Fame Golf Tournament at Heidelberg Country Club on Friday at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the golf tournament provide scholarships to Reading High graduates.

Tickets for the banquet are $75 for adults and $30 for students.

Bryant played safety, linebacker and running back, leading the Red Knights to a 9-2 record and a share of the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 title as a junior in 2000 and to an 8-2 record as a senior. He scored 19 touchdowns as a senior and went on to play at the University of Pittsburgh.

Burdine helped the Red Knights win a pair a District 3 basketball championships and three straight Berks Conference championships. He was Berks Player of the Year and a second-team All-State pick as a senior when he averaged 17.6 points per game. He finished with 1,281 career points.

Mayne, a 2009 graduate, excelled in sprints and was named All-County four times. He went on to run for Shippensburg University where he was a four-time PSAC champion.

Brown, a 2011 graduate, won both the District 3 and PIAA gold in the triple jump. He competed at the University of Pittsburgh and finished sixth in the triple jump at the NCAA Championships to earn All-American honors.

Kantner led the Red Knights to a PIAA baseball championship in 1983 and was drafted by the New York Mets. He went on to play four seasons at Alvernia and was part of the first 20-win team in program history.

Drexler, a 1956 graduate, was recognized as an All-American in football, wrestling, and track.

Sadlowski played football, baseball and wrestled for the Red Knights, graduating in 1993. He was a wide receiver on the 1992 Lancaster Lebanon League Section 1 co-champions and was named to the All-State third team. In wrestling he went 50-5 over two seasons. In baseball, he was a four-year starter at catcher and was captain of the 1993 Berks Conference champs. He went on to play baseball at Penn State University and was captain of the 1996 Big Ten Championship team.

Sherman earned eight varsity letters, in cross country, swimming, and track and field. The 1980 grad still holds the school record in the 800. She went on to run cross country and track at Bloomsburg University where she set the program record in the 1500.

The 1977 football team went 8-3 overall and undefeated in the Central Penn League to win the program’s first outright league championship. Jim Clontz was the head coach. Dave Pacella and Pete Patton were two-way All-Berks picks. Also earning All-Berks honors were running back Sam Johnson, end Greg Lebo and center Scott Weidner.
