Record-setting Raiders know the score better than anyone else

The only thing that’s stopped Twin Valley from scoring points in bunches this season has been a bye week.
That came on Halloween, the opening night of the District 3 Tournament. The Raiders, as one of the top seeds in Class 4A, earned a free pass to the quarterfinals.
Every Friday night before, and since, they’ve made a steady string of visits to the end zone.
They trailed by two touchdowns early in their district semifinal against West York – the stingiest defensive team in District 3 – but never broke stride, ending that game with 45 unanswered points.

They trailed at halftime last week but mounted a game-changing 16-play, 82-yard, 8 ½-minute, third-quarter drive that swung things in their favor for good; they ended the championship game with 27 unanswered points.
“They just (continued to) do what they do,” said Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrum. “They didn’t change a darned thing on either side of the ball.
“They just had confidence that their personnel and what they do was good enough, and it was.”
The unbeaten Raiders have scored points like no Berks County football team ever before. The 41 points against previously unbeaten Susquehanna Township pushed their season total to 681, most ever.
The previous record was 671, by Wyomissing in 2021. It took the Spartans 16 games to set that record. The Raiders eclipsed it in 13.
They are averaging 52.3 points per game, second-highest in the state and also second-highest in Berks history. Only Governor Mifflin, with Nick Singleton busting out of the backfield, has averaged more.
“They’re really good,” said Wolfrum, whose team held Twin Valley to a season-low scoring total in a 28-6 loss at Wyomissing in Week 8. “Brett (Myers) is a great coach, and their running backs are college-type kids. (Drew) Engle’s going to be playing Division I lacrosse at Army. They’re a top (program); they don’t mess around with guys that aren’t strong and fast.”
Engle is that. He’s rushed for 1,855 yards this season, is averaging 10.2 yards per carry, and has scored 36 touchdowns (fourth-most in Berks history).

He’s just part of the backfield mix. Junior Lucas Myers has run for 1,098 yard, scored 21 TDs, and is averaging 10.0 yards per carry.
“It’s a two-headed monster,” said Susquehanna Township coach Joe Headen. “You’re not just preparing for one big running back, you’re preparing for two who play behind a very well-coached offensive line.”
Their quarterback, Maverik Foster, is the top-rated passer in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. His top target, Ben Grundy, was the Section 4 Receiver of the Year a season ago. They play behind an O-line that will have several all-league picks when the teams are announced early next month.
“They run the ball so well that when do they throw a pass it’s usually successful because everybody’s playing their run so hard,” Wolfrum said.
Placekicker Nate Shaffer has been good on 59-of-61 PATs but the offense has been so efficient he hasn’t been called on to attempt a single field goal this season.
Here are a few notable offensive and scoring feats:
- They have scored 60 or more points five times, including three straight; before this season no Berks team had ever scored 60 points more than twice in the same season.
- Eighteen different players have scored a touchdown.
- Their average winning margin during the regular season was 46.0 per game. That’s easily the highest in Berks history.
- They have scored four times on defense, with three Pick-Sixes and a fumble recovery.
- They have returned five kickoffs and one punt for TDs.
- In the regular season they ranked No. 1 in total offense among the 37 teams in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.
- They have turned the ball over just six times, and quarterback Maverik Foster has not thrown an interception.
- They scored six or more touchdowns in 9-of-10 regular season games; no Berks team has ever done that before.
- They mercy-ruled 9-of-10 opponents in the regular season and one more (West Perry) in the postseason.
- They scored 45 points against a West York team that had allowed a total of 78 in its first 11 games.
- They scored 45 points against a Berks Catholic team allowed only 44 over its final six games.
- They have averaged 47.0 points in the postseason.
