Alex Erby, Pennsylvania’s all-time leading passer, was named the Pennsylvania Football Writers’ Class 1A Player of the Year for the second straight season after leading Steel-High to back-to-back PIAA championships.
The Naval Academy recruit set state records with 13,562 passing yards and 176 scoring passes during his four-year career, three of which ended with state titles.
He set another record with 61 TD passes this season, when he threw for 4,418 yards — second-highest ever — and just four interceptions during the Rollers’ 16-0 season. He threw five scoring passes in the state championship game against Fort Cherry.
Chris Eiswerth of South Williamsport, which reached the state semifinals before meeting Steel-High, is the Class 2A Coach of the Year.
Erby is one of six selections for Steel-High.
District 9 champ Redbank Valley, which reached the state semifinals, has seven selections, including a pair of wide receivers: Ashton Kahle and Mason Clouse. They helped quarterback Braylon Wagner, who threw for 3,045 yards and 46 TDs, earn an All-State nod as well.
The All-State teams for Class 4A, 5A, and 6A will be announced Friday.
