Ever thought of officiating high school or youth football games?

Now here’s your chance.

The Reading Football Officials Association is offering a free, five-week course for prospective officials, starting April 22.

The five, one-hour classes will guide prospective officials through the process of learning the mechanics of officiating and the rules of the game to prepare them to pass an on-line PIAA certification test.

“Officiating is a great way to stay connected to the game, give back to the community, and be part of a team,” said Ryan Bardi, rules interpreter for the Reading Football Officials. “We encourage anyone with an interest in football to come out and see if officiating is right for them.”

There’s a severe shortage of PIAA-registered officials across the state; fast learners could find themselves working a Berks high school game within a few years – maybe sooner.

Becoming PIAA-certified will allow officials to work games at the youth, junior high, junior varsity and varsity levels.

Classes begin with an information session Tuesday, April 22 at 7 at the Governor Mifflin Area Community Center. Classes will continue April 29, May 6, May 13, and May 20.

Attendees will learn about the requirements, training process, and benefits of officiating, including opportunities for mentorship, game assignments, and earning extra income.

Classes are open to anyone 16 or over.

“Whether you’re a football enthusiast, a former player, or simply looking for a rewarding way to stay involved, now is your chance to get started,” said Bardi.

The Reading Football Officials Association is dedicated to providing highly trained and professional officials for games in Berks County from mighty mites through high school.

The association is committed to upholding the integrity of the game while fostering a supportive community for officials of all experience levels.
