Raiders get early scores, late defensive stop to hold off Scouts, improve to 2-1

By Chris Deantonio — MikeDragoSports.com correspondent

After building an early lead, Twin Valley held off Conrad Weiser’s late-game comeback attempt thanks to defensive heroics from Evan Johnson and an offensive showcase from quarterback Evan Myers Friday night in Elverson.

The game started with a 15-yard touchdown run by Myers, and he secured the 28-16 non-league win over the Conrad Weiser Scouts with a 13-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

The Raiders opened up a 14-point lead in the first quarter. Myers scored on the Raiders first possession, and six minutes later, Twin Valley scored on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Myers to receiver Joshua Zolty. It was Zolty’s third catch of the drive.

Myers completed 9-of-14 pass attempts for 135 yards and a touchdown. He also ran four times for 41 yards and two touchdowns.

“Our guys have heart,” said Myers. “Our linemen did a great job blocking, and our receivers got open. This all came after a good week of practice, so it’s not unexpected.”

But the Scouts, led by Sevon Parham on the ground and Donovan Gingrich in the passing game, hung around all game, cutting the lead to five in the second half.

“When you are able to go up like that, you are able to get some momentum,” said Twin Valley coach Brett Myers. “We’re an extremely young team, and we handled the momentum shifts.”

The biggest momentum shift came when Conrad Weiser scored on Gingrich’s first completion — a 72-yard pass to Josh Miller for a second-quarter touchdown.

Twin Valley responded right away, as Drew Engle returned the ensuing kickoff 85-yards for a touchdown to put the Raiders back up two scores.

Big passing plays kept the Scouts in the game throughout the night. Gingrich completed 9-of-18 pass attempts for 206 yards. He threw one touchdown and one interception.

Conrad Weiser threatened to take the lead halfway through the fourth quarter, but Twin Valley’s Evan Johnson came up with an interception on his own 24 with just under six minutes left in the game.

Twin Valley dominated the ball in the fourth quarter, running 15 plays. They were led by Jaydon Goebel on the ground, who carried the ball eight times in the fourth quarter alone.

Goebel saved his best run of the night for Twin Valley’s final drive. He set up Myers’ final touchdown run with a 50-yard gain to Conrad Weiser’s 13.

“I’m the guy who has to pick up those yards,” said Goebel.

Goebel finished with 14 carries for a game-high 105 rushing yards.

Parham ran a game-high 21 times for 96 yards and one touchdown.
