NCAA signing day will be a busy one in Berks (updated)

Gov. Mifflin’s Nick Singleton signed his NCAA Letter of Intent in December and is already at Penn State taking classes and training for the Nittany Lions’ 2022 football season.

Several other top Berks football players signed during the NCAA’s early period; others will make things official Wednesday, on the first day of the regular signing period. It’ll be a busy day in Berks football with at least nine players committed to Division I programs and at least seven toPSAC schools.

Many local high schools have signing ceremonies scheduled.

Singleton, the Gatorade National Player of the Year, is the only Berks senior to earn a scholarship to an FBS school, the top level of college football. Berks Catholic’s Trace Brown is also committed to Penn State; he will be a preferred walk-on.

Seven other members of the Class of 2022 are committed to Division I FCS programs: Conrad Weiser’s Aanjay Feliciano (Stetson); Conrad Weiser’s Logan Klitsch (Dartmouth); Wyomissing’s Aiden Mack (Richmond); Fleetwood’s Tanner Maddocks (Villanova); Exeter’s J.R. Strauss (Villanova); Fleetwood’s Joey Svoboda (William & Mary); and Exeter’s Ty Yocum (Merrimack College).

That’s a bumper crop, one of the largest groups ever from Berks to land at Division I programs in the same year.

In addition there’s a large group headed to play at the Division II level in the highly competitive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. That group includes: Wyomissing’s Nevin Carter, Twin Valley’s Ryan Corros, Wilson’s TJ Flite, Twin Valley’s Trey Freeman, Wyomissing’s Ja-Mhi Jackson, Gov. Mifflin’s Eden Johnson, Daniel Boone’s Nate Millard, Gov. Mifflin’s Trey Rock and Wyomissing’s Amory Thompson.

Four players — Carter, Freeman, Rock and Thompson — are headed to California University of Pa. That’s an unusually large group headed to play at the same school.

Singleton and Brown will be joined in 2023 by Exeter’s Joey Schlaffer, who announced midway through his junior season his intention to play at Penn State.
