Evan Myers leads Raiders’ record-setting rout

Evan Myers showed out for the third straight week, scoring twice on the ground and twice with his arm as Twin Valley rolled past Olney Charter 69-0 in a non-league game Friday at Twin Valley.

Myers had three touchdown passes in the first quarter, when the Raiders (3-0) scored 49 points. They had 62 points by halftime and set a record for points scored in a game. The previous mark came in a 68-22 win over Kutztown in 2021.

The Trojans (0-3) never found an answer to stop the big-play ability of the Raiders.

The Raiders took advantage of great field position all night. All of their drives started inside Trojans territory. The longest Raiders scoring drive was 38 yards. The quick strikes were evident as four of the 10 touchdowns were of 14 yards or more yards.

A short Trojan punt resulted in a 19-yard scoring drive and put the Raiders up by 28. The Trojans didn’t punt again, choosing to go for it on all their fourth downs.

The Raiders defense came up with four fumble recoveries and four fourth-down stops. By dominating the line of scrimmage there was little to no room for the Trojans run game. Every time quarterback Jaydon Mettelus dropped back he had defenders in his face. Twin Valley only allowed three first downs.

Not to mention the defense put up some points. Greyson Miller scored on a fumble recovery early in the first quarter.

“The defense played great to get us the ball where it makes (scoring) a lot easier,” Evan Myers said.

Myers’ first pass attempt was intercepted. He rebounded with a rushing touchdown, then found his brother Lucas for 18 yards on the next drive.

“We definitely came out slow,” Evan Myers said. “The interception was on me. I made a bad read post-snap. We responded well throughout the game. The linemen trusted their feet, listened to the coaches, relied on their training, and the backs ran to open space.”

Evan Johnson scored three times on five touches. The senior running back was able to find open space on the outside, often cutting it out wide and winning the footraces.

“We looked explosive,” said Raiders coach Brett Myers. “We hit some quick hits and made some plays. It was just a good day.

“I think football is different than a lot of other high school sports because you only get 10 games. You play one game a week and practice a lot. . . I thought they deserved to come out and play today and they played hard today.”

Myers was not happy to see his team commit 10 penalties for 70 yards.

“We’ve gotta cut out the penalties, we’ve gotta block better, we’ve gotta tackle better and we’ve gotta create more turnovers,” he said.

The Raiders played without junior running back Drew Engle for the second straight week. Engle rushed for a record 1,599 yards a season ago.
