Mustangs ranked No. 1 in the state — with a bullet

Even with a dominating performance against state-ranked Harrisburg there was no place higher for Gov. Mifflin to go in the state rankings — the Mustangs reached No. 1 the Class 5A last week for the first time in program history.

The Mustangs took apart the Cougars, who had been ranked No. 9 in Class 6A; that one-sided loss knocked them out of the PennLive.Com Top Team and into the Teams To Watch category.

Wyomissing remained No. 3 in Class 3A and Berks Catholic moved up one rung in 4A for the second straight week, to No. 6.

Exeter, which had been a Team To Watch in 5A, dropped off that list after a 17-14 loss at Hempfield.

Only one other District 3 team, unbeaten Manheim Central, is ranked in the Class 5A Top 10; the Barons are No. 8. They head to Wilson Friday.

Wyomissing remains the only District 3 team among the 14 listed in its classification.

Each of the other five top-ranked teams held their spots at the top: St. Joseph’s Prep in 6A, Thomas Jefferson in 4A, North Schuylkill in 3A, Southern Columbia in 2A and Steel-High in 1A.

In 6A, Archbishop Wood dropped from No. 2 to No. 6 after a 21-0 loss to Malvern Prep. Malvern (2-1) plays at Berks Catholic Friday. The Friars, like other non-PIAA schools, are not included in the rankings.

Berks Catholic is two spots behind Bishop McDevitt, the only other District 3 team in the 4A rankings.

Mifflin was ranked No. 2 last season and lost to top-ranked and eventual PIAA champ Pine-Richland 48-44 in a hard-fought semifinal.

In 6A, Central York remains No. 4; C.D. East and Harrisburg are the only other District 3 teams mentioned.

Central York is the only District 3 team ranked in 2A; the Fighting Irish are No. 10

Top-ranked Steel-High is the only District 3 team in 1A.
