Muhls’ Michael Miller Jr.: Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week

Michael Miller Jr. showed off all of his skills Friday in Muhlenberg’s convincing 35-17 win over rival Governor Mifflin.

  • He intercepted a pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
  • He took a Jet Sweep toss 9 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
  • He turned a potential loss into a 15-yard touchdown run in the final quarter when he bounced outside and slipped through three more tacklers and down the sideline.

“He’s so dynamic,” said Muhls coach Rob Flowers. “He can run the ball. He can catch it. He’s been blocking well. He’s been doing a lot of things really well.”

Miller Jr. finished the Muhls’ biggest win in years with 54 rushing yards on nine carries, five receptions for 54 yards, and six tackles, easily enough to net his first Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week award.

“He had a huge game,” Flowers said.

He could’ve had more. Late in the game, on a fourth-and-goal from the 16, the 6-foot, 185-pound Miller Jr. leaped over a defender in the corner of the end zone and came down with the ball, though the play was ruled an incompletion. That would’ve netted him his first four-touchdown game. (He had never scored three TDs in a game before.)

Miller Jr. almost had a second pick, too. One play before his Pick-Six the swift safety jumped a route but couldn’t hold onto the ball. When the Mustangs ran a similar route on the next snap Miller was ready; he grabbed the pass in front of the Mifflin bench and streaked into the end zone, a game-changing play that put the Muhls ahead 21-3 with 1:09 left in the half.

Miller Jr. has been one of the keys to Muhlenberg’s first 5-0 start in 12 seasons. He had a pair of TD catches and 156 receiving yards – the most in Berks this season – in the opener against Schuylkill Valley; he also topped 100 receiving yards against Daniel Boone. He has twice scored on runs of more than 70 yards and two weeks ago had a Pick-Six against Lebanon.

He’s always been a versatile player who could man just about any skill position; he’s played both linebacker and safety on defense and is moved around on offense from running back to wide receiver.

This season he’s been lining up as the quarterback in the Wildcat formation, taking direct snaps. Several of his runs Friday came from that formation.

He showed his versatility last season when he rushed for 430 yards, second on the team, averaging 7.9 yards per carry and scoring six TDs. He led the team with 25 receptions for 312  yards and three TDs.

He’s averaging 8.2 yards per carry this season with four rushing TDs and leads the team with 16 receptions. He has scored 10 touchdowns, tied for fourth-most in Berks.

“He trained a lot this offseason,” said Flowers. “He got stronger and more explosive. That’s what’s been making him play at the level he’s playing at right now.”

Miller Jr. got off to a fast start at Muhlenberg. He was so advanced as a seventh-grader that he spent time playing with the freshman team; he was in the varsity starting lineup on defense in Week 1 as a ninth-grader and took an interception to the house (the TD was nullified by a penalty).

The next week, against Reading High, he was added to special teams and returned a kickoff 80 yards for a score. He was in the starting lineup on offense by Week 3 and scored on a 50-yard run in a Week 4 win over Lebanon.

He is the second Muhlenberg player selected as Player of the Week this season; quarterback Adriel Baez was the pick in Week 3.
