Muhlenberg’s home game Friday against Gov. Mifflin will be played at Albright College due to ongoing issues with the turf at the Muhls’ home stadium.
Senior Night for the Muhls will begin at 7:30 at Shirk Stadium.
This marks the third straight week that Muhlenberg has moved a home game off campus due to issues with its newly installed turf playing surface. The field was deemed “unsafe” by school officials because a metal filler was used beneath the playing surface.
The issue emerged following the Muhls’ season-opening 29-20 victory vs. Schuylkill Valley, played at Muhlenberg Stadium. No games, in any sport, have been played there since.
The Muhls’ Week 3 game vs. Daniel Boone was moved to Kutztown University. Last week’s game against Lebanon was moved to Alumni Stadium in Lebanon.
Muhlenberg has just one remaining home game scheduled, Oct. 11 vs. Ephrata. That is designated as Homecome. There’s no word on whether the stadium turf will be playable by that point.
“There’s nothing more heart-wrenching than what we are going through with our facilities right now,” Muhlenberg superintendent Dr. Joseph Macharola said last week. “(It) bothers me (that) our kids are not gonna be able to play (at home).”
Despite the uncertainty, the Muhls are off to a strong start, winning three of their first four games.
