The state’s winningest football program reached a magical milestone Friday.
Mount Carmel became the first Pennsylvania team to reach 900 victories when it beat Central Columbia 43-16 at the Silver Bowl.
The Red Tornadoes were denied that milestone in their season-opener, which they dropped to North Schuylkill, 37-30.

Mount Carmel was one of the first teams in the state to field a football team; it first played in 1893. Since then it has gone 900-344, according to stats compiled by pafootballnews.com.
Only three other teams have won as many as 800 games: Easton (876), Berwick (841), and Steel-High (804).
Wilson, the winningest team in Berks history, is among the 50 winningest programs in the state with 602 victories following its win Friday over Plymouth-Whitemarsh. The Bulldogs’ first season was 1945.
Bishop McDevitt ranks second among District 3 teams with 638 victories. Manheim Central is next, with 606, following by Middletown (605) and Wilson.
In Berks, Reading High is No. 2 all-time with 546 wins, followed by Wyomissing Area (458), Gov. Mifflin (415) and Muhlenberg (408).
Wilson earned its 600th victory last season with a 47-20 win over McCaskey.
Mount Carmel went 10-3 last season, reaching the District 4 Class 2A semifinals.
