Mifflin’s Cam’Ron Stewart draws notice after impactful Gator Bowl performance

Gov. Mifflin grad Cam’Ron Stewart enjoyed the best game of his freshman season at Rutgers in a 38-10 loss to Wake Forest Friday in the Gator Bowl Friday at ITAA Bank Field in Jacksonville.

Stewart, a true freshman, recorded three solo tackles and was credited with an assist. The 6-4, 245-pound defensive lineman was in on a tackle for loss.

Stewart, an All-State pick at Mifflin, had seen action in just two previous games this season, against Indiana and Ohio State.

Stewart had a sack early in the game against Wake Forest but it was waved off by an offsides penalty.

According to a post-game report on scarletnation.com, Stewart “has been turning heads throughout the fall and his progress is also very promising for the future. He showed the ability to get into the backfield and could be a major part of the Rutgers defense next season.”

Stewart saw more playing time Friday because starting defensive end Aaron Lewis did not suit up for the game. The other defensive end, Mike Tverdov, played his last game for the Scarlet Knights. Stewart is expected to compete for a starting job next season.

Stewart was a key piece of Mifflin’s 2020 District 3 Class 5A championship team, which reached the PIAA semifinals for the first time in school history.

He was a two-time Berks Defensive Lineman of the Year and earned the MVP award for Pennsylvania in its 20-0 victory over Maryland in the 2021 Big 33 Classic.

Rutgers finished the season 5-8. It had just nine days to prepare for the bowl game after Texas A&M was forced to drop out.
