Mustangs, Patrick Steuer run to Eastern Conference championship

POCONO SUMMIT — Patrick Steuer rushed for a season-high 280 yards and three scores as Gov. Mifflin ended its season with a 51-14 win over Pocono Mountain West in the Eastern Conference Class 5A/6A championship game Friday night.

It is the Mustangs’ second Eastern Conference championship; they won in their first appearance in 2004, beating East Stroudsburg South.
The Mustangs (4-7) led just 16-14 at halftime before scoring five unanswered touchdowns against the Panthers (5-6) in the second half.
The 51 points was the most Mifflin had produced this season; it scored 49 in a win over Lebanon.
Rylan Overley ran for 108 yards and scored on runs of 5 and 22 yards for the Mustangs. Lucas Kreider also scored on a 1-yard run.
Jayden Jimenez had a Pick-6 for the Mustangs.
Lance Koenig added a 40-yard field goal, extending his program single-season record to eight.
Steuer carried 30 times and scored on runs of 49, 9, and 5 yards. He finishes the season with a team-leading 978 yards.
The Mustangs missed out on the district playoffs after losing their final two regular season games but finished second in the Eastern Conference power ratings. The EC playoffs are for teams that miss the district playoffs.
The Mustangs also appeared in the EC playoffs in 2005 and 2023. Overall, they have a 4-2 record.
Pocono Mountain West got off to a 3-0 start this season but ended the regular season with losses in four of its final five games to fall out of the District 11 Class 6A playoff chase. It ends the season on a three-game losing streak.
The Mustangs made the district playoffs last season after a 5-5 regular season finish.
