Entering the season Kutztown football coach Larry Chester said that his team was “in a different place.”
The Cougars are in their sixth year of running the Power-T offense that can feature multiple backs with quick handoffs. On Friday against visiting York Tech Kutztown was in a far different place than the Spartans.
Behind an overpowering rushing attack, Kutztown rolled past York Tech 66-26 in a non-league game.
The 66 points are the second-most every scored by the Cougars; they set the record in a 76-37 win over Peqea Valley in 2021.
“It is about the knowledge level of our players,” Chester said. “They understand the system and they communicate with us on the sidelines of what they are seeing. It is an old school system, but it works for us.”
In a season-opening loss the Cougars racked up 368 yards against Fleetwood before five fumbles took away any chance of a win. Kutztown cleaned its game up against the Spartans and yielded just one fumble while taking away four.
“I thought we did a far better job with ball security tonight,” Chester said. “Our guys really focused on protecting the ball in practice this week. We need to be better with penalties though.”
The teams combined for 28 penalties for 243 yards with most of the damage coming on the Spartans side with 16 penalties for 143 yards. Kutztown capitalized on every York Tech mistake which came aplenty in the contest.
York Tech had a potential opening-drive touchdown pass dropped, which was ultimately a sign of things to come. Kutztown went right to the ground on its first drive and six runs later it was 7-0.
Running back Mason Sherry got the attack going with a 35-yard run on the first play.
“Communication, blocking, running, we had it all working tonight,” Sherry said. “Last year was a little tough for us because I feel like we did not communicate as well as we should have as a team.”

The Cougars turned a pair of the York Tech fumbles into 14 points and scored a touchdown on their first six possessions of the game. The Spartans finally forced a Cougars punt early in the second quarter.
However, a roughing the punter penalty kept the Kutztown drive alive which eventually ended in a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Wyatt Stoess to tight end Tyler Wicke making it 27-6.
York Tech fumbled immediately on its ensuing possession and Stoess hit Ryan Walters over the middle for a 38-yard touchdown.
“I loved how opportunistic the guys were,” Chester said. “There were plenty of chances to put them away early and while we had our bumps they left no doubt in the end.”
The Cougars three-back rushing attack powered the way for a whopping 544 yards on 71 carries that averaged 7.7 yards per carry. Whether it was Sherry, Ian Bahr, or Walters, the Cougars went directly at the Spartans front all night.
“Our line is well put together,” Sherry said. “Big guys at tackles. Our guards and tight ends round the show out as well and it helps all of us.”
Sherry led the charge with 229 yards on 21 carries and three touchdowns, two in the second half when the Cougars outscored the Spartans 26-6. Bahr, doing much of the tough running between the tackles, nearly eclipsed 200 yards himself with 192 on 23 carries and three touchdowns.
Bahr’s final run of the night was a 49-yard burst up the middle.
Serge McGill was one of the lone bright spots for York Tech, running a pair of kickoffs back for touchdowns.
The Cougars leveled their record to 1-1 overall while avenging a 21-14 setback at the hands of the Spartans last season. York Tech of the York-Adams League fell to 0-2 overall.
Kutztown (1-1) took care of avenging one tough loss from last year and now it’s on to another game they wish they had back last season in Octorara next Friday. The Cougars dropped a heartbreaking 20-14 overtime contest to the Braves last season.
“We are doing nothing different heading into that game,” Chester said. “We are giving them off Monday and have them go home and enjoy their families this weekend. At the end of the day, we have to run our system regardless of who it is and what happened in the past.”
