Few teams have been able to interrupt Wilson’s dominance in Section 1 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League.

The one coach who has, Mark Evans of Manheim Township, is set for induction into the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame May 24.

Evans, who has won or shared five Section 1 titles since coming to Township in 2013, will be inducted along with Littlestown coach Mike Lippy, Mike Mischler of Erie Cathedral Prep, Tom Gravish of Jersey Shore, Tom Loughran of South Park and Fox Chapel, Terry Smith of Gateway and Penn State, and the late Larry Greene, who coached at Central Bucks East and Pennsbury.

The ceremony will take place prior to the Big 33 Classic, at Cumberland Valley High School.

Wilson’s Doug Dahms and Schuylkill Valley’s Bruce Harbach were part of last year’s induction class.

Evans has gone 120-45 in 14 seasons at Township and has 194 career victories, including 14 seasons at Elco.

In 2017, Manheim Township beat Wilson 38-14, snapping a 68-game league winning streak, the longest in Lancaster-Lebanon League history. The Blue Streaks later beat the Bulldogs in the district playoffs, becoming just the second program to beat Wilson twice in the same season. Governor Mifflin was the first.

Township went on to win its only District 3 championship in 2017, claiming the Class 6A title.

After losing his first six meetings against Wilson, Evans’ teams have gone 5-5 against the Bulldogs over the past nine seasons. They won last season 20-17 to clinch the Section 1 title.

Township is one of only four programs to beat the Bulldogs three times over a three-year span; Evans did it from 2017-19.

Township finished 10-2 last season and claimed its fifth section title under Evans. He also won outright Section 1 titles in 2023, 2019, and 2017, and shared the title with Wilson and Warwick in 2018.

Over the past 18 season Wilson has six league losses, four to Township. The other losses are to Hempfield (in 2022) and Warwick (in 2018).

Evans went 74-71 at Elco and reached the District 3 playoffs four times, including a Class AA title-game appearance against Wyomissing in 2001.

Evans played at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College before transferring to the University of Miami. He was a member of 1987 and 1989 National Championship teams coached by Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson, respectively.

Evans spent three years as an assistant coach at Shippensburg University and four seasons as an assistant at Lebanon Valley College before becoming an assistant coach at Elco in 1997. He was named Elco’s head coach in 1998.
