P.J. Myers’ fourth-quarter scores help Manheim Township outlast York

NEFFSVILLE — Three weeks, three games and three close calls for Manheim Township’s football team, which picked up a gut-check win Friday night.

Jack Kenneff had three touchdown passes, P.J. Myers had a pair of must-have fourth-quarter TD runs and the Blue Streaks outlasted pesky York 43-34 in a wild non-league game at Neffsville.
That’s three nail-biters for Township: A 7-0, eke-it-out victory over Cumberland Valley; a 36-28 nip-and-tuck setback in Week 2 at state-ranked Central York; and Friday’s latest barn burner, when the Streaks took the Bearcats’ best uppercuts throughout and got out of Dodge at 2-1 through the first three grueling weeks.
“What I like about our kids,” Township coach Mark Evans said, “is that they’re establishing themselves as a gritty team. We might not have success or we might not be clicking every time, but we’re finding ways to win.”
That was apparent Friday, when York kept slugging. Township kept absorbing body blows and delivered the last couple of jabs.
“Everyone was hungry at practice all week,” Township’s Allan Feliciano said. “We couldn’t wait to redeem ourselves. It was an offensive battle. And we were able to outscore them in the end.”
Township also survived York tailback Shavane Anderson, who jetted for 209 yards, including a 36-yard TD sprint in the second half, which was a bit of a blur.
It was an 8-8 game after the first quarter. Kenneff flipped an 8-yard TD pass to Landon Crane, and a two-point run made it 8-0.
York, which beat Hempfield 22-16 in overtime last week, rallied for its only lead of the game.
Najee Still had two TD passes — one to Jaishan Matte, the other to Sa’Mir Gwynn — and a two-point run gave the Bearcats a 14-8 advantage.
Township had a 15-14 lead at the half after Kenneff zipped a 12-yard TD strike to Chase Fletcher with 49 seconds left in the second quarter.
Township got third-quarter scores from two of their veterans. Feliciano took a screen pass 63 yards for a TD, and Marcos Fernandez had a 5-yard TD run, which gave the Streaks a seemingly safe 29-14 lead.
Fernandez’s run came after Will Milazzo and Malakai Minguez stuffed York (1-2) on a fourth down.
Anderson’s 36-yard bolt cut into that deficit, and York was within 29-28 after an interception and Still’s 19-yard TD run.
“We have to learn how to put teams away,” Evans said. “That will be the coming of age as a team for this group, when we can finish teams off. That’s our key. Tonight, our guys found a way, and that’s what we’ve been talking about. That unbreakable spirit was there.”
And just in the nick of time.
Township finally was able to exhale when Myers had a pair of fourth-quarter TD runs, including a 35-yard dash with 1:28 to go to ice it.
“Early in the season, we’ve been getting some really good competition,” Feliciano said. “I thought tonight we were more poised and more relaxed. We trusted ourselves and we didn’t hang our heads. Our heads were up.”
And Township escaped yet another close game in what has already been a season of close games for the Streaks.
