Mack, Williams among six Wyomissing All-State picks in Class 3A

Bob Wolfrum didn’t need to see half-a-dozen Wyomissing players earn All-State honors to confirm that the Spartans had a great season.

Still, the long-time Wyomissing coach found it rewarding to hear that fullback Tommy Grabowski, tight end Aiden Mack, offensive lineman Jven Williams, linebacker Jack Miller and cornerbacks Nevin Carter and Amory Thompson were named to the Pennsylvania Football Writers Class 3A All-State team Tuesday.

“It’s pretty neat, because it usually means you had a great season,” said Wolfrum, whose team won a third straight District 3 championship, went 15-1 and reached a second straight PIAA championship game.

“The further you go in the playoffs, it seems the more guys you get on these teams, and rightly so. It says you’ve got some good players, and this group obviously was a good group.”

The Wyomissing picks are joined on the Class 3A team by Hamburg running back/defensive back Diohnny Ruiz, who was selected as an Athlete on the 45-player team. He is Hamburg’s first first-team All-State pick. The team was selected by sportswriters across the state.

The Wyomissing haul is the second-largest in Berks history. Last year the Spartans set the record, earning seven spots. That team also reached the PIAA championship game.

Central Martinsburg quarterback Jeff Hoenstine, who set a state record with 57 touchdown passes (and just four interceptions) was named Player of the Year. He led his team to the state semifinals.

Mark Lyons of PIAA champion Central Valley was named Coach of the Year. His team defeated Wyomissing 7-0 in the championship game.

Central Valley had seven All-State selections, including running back Landon Alexander and defensive lineman Sean FitzSimmons.

It’s interesting to note that none of Wyomissing’s six selections were picked last year. Just three of them were return starters at those positions: Mack, Carter and Thompson. Grabowski was a starting linebacker as a junior but saw only backup time at fullback. Miller was part of a linebacker rotation as a junior, but didn’t start. Williams, the only junior of the group, saw only back-up time as a sophomore.

Each of the players with expanded roles made huge progress this season as the Spartans became just the second team in Berks history to win 15 games and set the record for points scored.

“We had a very small senior class,” said Wolfrum, “but it was a really good one. Not only talent, but leadership, as well. Those guys really had it together. Because we had 20-some seniors graduate (following the 2020 season), people thought we’d go downhill but we knew what we had coming. Those guys wanted to prove something.”

Grabowski rushed for 1,417 yards, scored a team-best 26 touchdowns and averaged 7.1 yards per carry. He was a three-year starter at linebacker and was second on the team with 73 tackles.

Mack, a Richmond recruit, was an All-Berks pick at both tight end and defensive end. He averaged 24.8 yards on his 10 catches. His main value on offense was as a blocker, a skill he excelled at. He was a key in a Wyomissing offense that averaged 310 rushing yards per game.

Williams, the Offensive Lineman of the Year in Section 2 of Berks Football League, was obviously a key to that ground game, as well. He possesses rare foot speed for a 6-4, 300-pound lineman. He often played Lance (pulling) guard in Wing-T, and easily got around the corner to lead Buck and Jet sweeps.

Miller was coLinebacker of the Year in Section 2 of Berks Football League and an All-Berks first-team pick. He was the catalyst for Berks’ top-ranked defense and led the team with 78 tackles. He had two blocked punts, five sacks, and three forced fumbles. He also started at guard on offense.

Carter was a true lock-down cornerback who was rarely challenged because of his defensive prowess. He had three interceptions, returning one for a TD. In six postseason games Wyomissing opponents passed for a total of 89 yards, completing 15-of-65 passes.

Thompson was selected as an athlete because of his versatility. The three-year starter at cornerback was strong in coverage and against the run. He also rushed for 911 yards, averaging 8.7 per carry, and scored 17 TDs. He handled punt and kickoff returns.

The Spartans’ seven picks a year ago were the most of any team in Class 3A. The 2020 selections: Zach Zechman, defensive back; Darren Brunner and Evan Niedrowski, linebacker; Aidan Cirulli, placekicker; Steve Olexy, defensive line; Jack Feightner, offensive line; and Jordan Auman, athlete.

Prior to last season the most All-State picks Wyomissing had ever had was four. That came in 2012, after the Spartans claimed the PIAA Class AA championship. There were just four classifications at that point, which made it more difficult to earn All-State status.

Linebacker Alex Anzalone was Player of the Year. Defensive lineman Jeriko Reyes, offensive lineman Ben Wertz and placekicker Jonah Bowman were first-team picks. Wolfrum was Coach of the Year.
