It was a tale of two talented senior quarterbacks leading their teams in one of the biggest games of the year filled with milestones.
It was Schuylkill Valley senior Logan Nawrocki who came out on top, delivering in a big way with three touchdown passes to outduel Hamburg senior quarterback Tyler Shuey’s three-touchdown night to claim the 50th annual Frost Bowl with a 30-21 Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 5 victory at a standing room only Hamburg Stadium.
Both quarterbacks achieved milestones Friday with Shuey breaking a school record for passing yardage, surpassing Matt Deibler’s record of 3,855. Shuey finished the night with 292 yards passing (136 yards rushing) giving him 4,079 passing yards for his career. After breaking Schuylkill Valley’s all-time passing mark last week, Logan Nawrocki eclipsed the 4,000-yard mark with 314 yards passing in the game.
However, the night belonged to Nawrocki and the Panthers (5-0, 6-2) who came out on top to maintain sole possession of first place in Section 5. A loss for Hamburg (3-2, 5-3) left them out of a chance for at least a share of the title.
Nawrocki found his long-time target Logan Spotts twice for touchdown passes (10 and 36 yards), the latter midway through a fast-paced fourth quarter expanding the Panthers lead to 10 with 7:44 left in the game.
Less than a minute later, Shuey answered with a 30-yard strike to Daniel Brady cutting the lead to three. The Panthers responded with a 12-play game-clinching drive capped off by a Cooper Hohenadel two-yard run on fourth-and-goal. There was just not enough time left for Shuey and the Hawks.
Schuylkill Valley controls its own destiny with two home games remaining. They play Annville Cleona Friday at 7, followed by meeting with perennial favorite Lancaster Catholic the following week. Two wins will give the Panthers their first outright section title since joining the Lancaster-Lebanon League.
Hamburg heads to Berks Catholic next week.
