Logan Klitsch accounts for 7 TDs as Scouts survive shootout vs. Tigers

By Pete Beck — MikeDragoSports.com correspondent

Conrad Weiser’s 52-38 Berks Football League Section 2 victory over Fleetwood Friday at Robesonia lived up to every bit of pre-game billing.

The league opener featured two of Berks’ best quarterbacks, Weiser’s Logan Klitsch and Fleetwood’s Tanner Maddocks, and they did not disappoint.

Maddocks threw for a career-high 293 yards and four touchdowns, only to be out-done by Klitsch, who accounted for seven TDs.

The Scouts’ senior threw for a career-high 308 yards and three TDs and ran 18 times for140 yards and four scores. He completed 16-of-21 passes.

Klitsch’s passing total is second-highest in program history, trailing only the 330 yards by Jim Debiec in 2008 vs. West York.

Maddocks’ passing total ranks as fourth-most in program history.

The teams combined for 47 first downs nearly 1,100 yards; the game did not finish until well after 10 p.m..

The first half resembled a track meet more than a football game as the Villanova-bound Maddocks lead the Tigers (0-1, 2-2) to two scores and 141 yards of offense on their first two possessions — spanning just six plays.

Klitsch, who committed to Dartmouth earlier this week, was able to keep pace by marching the Scouts (1-0, 3-1) into the end zone on two of their first three possessions.

Both defenses tried to contain the running ability of the quarterbacks, choosing to play would-be targets shallow and allowing their defensive lines to establish an edge.

Klitsch and the Scouts were able to take advantage by focusing on rollouts and draw plays to keep the Tigers defenders at bay, while at the same time opening up crossing routes underneath.

Maddocks and the Tigers sought to keep the Scouts off-balance by hammering the ball through the middle of the line, thanks to the hard-nosed running of Gavin Morris, and connecting for deeper level passes once the linebackers were engaged to stop the run.

Both teams scored at a dizzying pace throughout the first half, which ended with the Scouts leading 28-24.

Clearly, something would have to change in the second half.

“We decided to mix it up in the first half, bringing pressure and sitting back,” said Scouts head coach Alan Moyer. “At halftime we decided to stick with the pressure.”

Slowly but surely the Scouts’ adjustments paid off.

Maddocks, who lost a valuable asset in Gage Moyer to an apparent leg injury at the end of the first half, was unable to consistently find any outlets once he dropped back and frequently found himself scrambling in the wrong direction.

Maddocks connected on his first three passes of the second half, with a touchdown, but ended up 4-of-18 with two interceptions. Overall, he completed 12-of-31 passes.

“I was very proud of our kids in the second half, digging deep,” Moyer said. “That’s what Friday night lights are all about.”
