The first recipient of the Berks County Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year award was John Gurski in 1981.

Two decades later the coach’s association named the award in honor of the legendary Wilson coach, who retired in 1982 as the winningest coach in Berks history.

Gurski was the first of 21 different coaches bestowed with the honor over the past 44 seasons.

Wyomissing’s Bob Wolfrum has won the award eight times, more than anyone, including four times in the five seasons before Conrad Weiser’s Alan Moyer was named the 2024 Coach of the Year.

That figures since Wolfrum has won far more games than any coach in Berks history (372) over his 38 seasons, as well as more district championships (12) and the only state championship, in 2012.

He is one of 11 multiple-time recipients. Gov. Mifflin’s Mick Vecchio has been named five times. Moyer, Gerry Slemmer and Jim Cantafio of Wilson, and Rick Keeley have each been named three times. Keeley was named once at Berks Catholic and twice at Holy Name. He is the only person named Coach of the Year at two different Berks schools.

There are five two-time recipients: Jack Paris of Wyomissing, Bill Sakusky of Hamburg, John Yocum of Muhlenberg, Dave Bodolus of Daniel Boone and Doug Dahms of Wilson.

The award was shared just once, in 1997, by Reading High’s Al Wolski and Exeter’s Ron Zeiber.

Only Wolfrum and Slemmer are the only coaches to receive the award in consecutive seasons.

Wyomissing coaches have been named 10 times, Wilson coaches nine times. (Four different Wilson coaches have won the award.)

Only two schools are absent from the list of recipients: Fleetwood and Twin Valley.
