Entering the Berks County Football Coaches Hall of Fame provided some special moments for the newest members inducted Saturday evening.
Former Conrad Weiser running back Marques Glaze flew in from Texas with his family to be at the ceremony. His former teammate, running back Doug Werner, traveled from his home in Ohio. Wyomissing rushing champ Kevin Dice made the trip from New Jersey.
They were joined at the Green Valley Chateau by fellow inductees Barry Rapp, Dr. Thomas Kohl and Gary Williams. The seventh member of the 22nd BCFCA Hall of Fame Class, Bert Moore, was inducted posthumously.
Werner remarked how special it was to be inducted with Glaze, whom he played with at both Weiser and Bloomsburg University.
Williams thanked his many coaches at Gov. Mifflin and Penn State, including the late Joe Paterno.
Kohl pointed out the importance in his journey of local athletic trainers Dan Geisen (of Wyomissing) and Terry Ventresca (of Conrad Weiser), each a member of the Hall.
Dice presented a photograph of he and Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrum during a practice session with the Spartans.
Earlier, Dice was moved when David Gilmore, a top rival from Central Catholic when both were seniors, stopped by just to meet him and talk about their historic Inter-County League clash in 1983.
With the addition of seven inductees the Hall now includes 146 members. There are 38 coaches, 12 special contributors, and six officials. Many members were selected for both their playing and coaching accomplishments.
Former players must be at least 35 years old to be considered for the Hall; former coaches must be at least 50 years old and have coached at least 15 years.
