For a while it appeared this game between the rivals, located just over 10 miles apart, would go to overtime before the Scouts (2-0) began driving in the final six minutes.

Conrad Weiser got a key fourth-down completion on its game-winning drive from Connor Sellars to Owen Kerns for 16 yards.

Javien Rivera, who rushed for 99 yards on 18 carries, took in the go-ahead score from 2 yards out to give the Scouts a 21-14 lead with 1:11 remaining.

“We have some dogs up front,” Rivera said of his offensive line, which paved the way for the winning score. “Hey, take control up front, push them back. It’s easy to find the hole.”

Overall, the Scouts rushed 53 times for 232 yards. Brayden Sweitzer ran for 92 yards on 22 carries.

“Up front, we were pushing them off the ball,” said Weiser coach Alan Moyer. “We finally decided not to make mistakes.”

Elco’s bid to tie the game in the final minute fell short when Brinley Donmoyer’s pass was intercepted by Kerns, who took it back 31 yards for a touchdown with 20 seconds remaining.

“Our defense was pretty outstanding,” said Moyer of a unit that allowed just 209 yards and came up with three takeaways.

The teams were tied 7-7 at the end of a sloppy first half, with both teams turning the ball over. Sellars drove the Scouts to a score on their first possession, hitting Dylan Parr on an 8-yard scoring strike.

Elco (0-2) responded by capitalizing on one of three lost fumbles by the Scouts. Griffin Keiser scooped up a Rivera fumble and raced 32 yards for a touchdown.

Conrad Weiser lost 20 starters from last year’s Section 3 championship team. Rivera says this year’s team is ready to answer the challenge.

“We believe in ourselves,” he said. “It’s next man up.”

The late rally made it a special night for Moyer, who earned his 150th win.

Moyer became the winningest coach in program history in 2017, with his 105th victory. Overall in 23 seasons he has a 150-96 record. He has coached more seasons and more games than anyone in program history.

“They are 150 special wins,” he said. “It’s everything. I bleed blue and white.”
