LAMPETER — After falling behind and struggling to get its offense going in the first quarter Friday night, Lampeter-Strasburg rallied to run away with a 44-21 Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 victory over visiting Daniel Boone.

Daniel Boone took advantage of a fumbled punt by Lampeter-Strasburg, quickly scoring on a 25-yard pass from Haydn Moyer to Harrison Dellisaint. From that point on, however, it was all Pioneers as they controlled the line of scrimmage in rattling off 41 straight points to take a commanding 44-7 lead.

Lampeter-Strasburg kicker Peter Fiorello set the tone with his legs in more ways than one. After putting the Pioneers (2-0, 5-0) on the board with a 34-yard field goal, his gutsy play turned the game around.

Trailing 7-3 and facing a fourth-and-long at midfield, Fiorello took the snap on a fake punt, raced around the right side and plowed over a would-be tackler to get a crucial first down.

On the next play, Caileb Howse ran up the middle for a 32-yard score to put the Pioneers up 10-7, a lead they never relinquished.

Throughout the second quarter, as Lampeter-Strasburg struggled to find its offensive rhythm, Fiorello’s punts twice pinned Daniel Boone (0-2, 0-5) in the shadow of its own end zone.

The Pioneer defense took over from there, registering a sack at the Daniel Boone 1-yard line and then an interception by Cole Lopez that he returned 35 yards to the 5-yard line.

Dominic Brown took it in from there, scoring the first of his two rushing touchdowns.

Late in the first half, on a play where Howse found Preston Schonour for a 29-yard scoring strike, Daniel Boone’s Henry Rivello suffered an injury that delayed the game for about 15 minutes and required him to be taken off the field on a stretcher and cart.

The Pioneers scored 21 quick points in the third quarter to put the game away. Brown scored his second touchdown on a 20-yard run, Danny Weichler returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown and Howse plowed in from 8 yards out to finish the scoring for Lampeter-Strasburg.

Daniel Boone showed some fight in the fourth as Moyer found Dellisaint for two more touchdowns from 15 and 20 yards out.

At halftime, Lampeter-Strasburg honored longtime head football coach John Manion with induction into the school’s athletic hall of fame. In addition to guiding the Pioneers to the school’s first district titles, he oversaw an increase in roster size from less than 30 players to more than 60, a legacy that this year’s team looks to continue.

The Pioneers also inducted longtime softball coach Gene Charles, who led them to a pair of state championships in 2018 and 2021.
