ATGLEN — Entering Week 6 of the high school football season, the longest field goal made by a Lancaster-Lebanon League kicker was 41 yards, a distance cleared in Week 3 by Warwick’s Tyler Schoffstall.
Lampeter-Strasburg kicker Peter Fiorello surpassed that mark with a 44-yard field goal in the Pioneers’ 45-0 L-L Section 4 romp at Octorara on Friday night.
And he did it in the rain, on a slick grass field.
“I got Carson Zook snapping and Caileb Howse holding, so I don’t have to worry about too much,” Fiorello said. “I just have to pat down the grass a bit. The elements (rain, wet grass) you try to put it in the back of your mind.”
It highlighted what was otherwise a business trip for undefeated Lampeter-Strasburg (3-0, 6-0).
The opening drive for Octorara (1-2, 3-3) ended when a snap on a punt attempt went over the head of the punter.
L-S got the ball at the 11-yard line and scored on the next play when QB Caileb Howse (8-for-9, 164 yards, three TDs) connected with Emory Fluhr through the air.
Howse later found Danny Weichler on a 35-yard passing TD.
After an Octorara fumble recovered by Preston Schonour, Lampeter-Strasburg pushed the lead to 21-0 on a 11-yard scamper from running back Dominic Brown (11 carries, 62 yards, two TDs).
Aven Cunningham hauled in a pair of 19-yard catches on a 6-play, 52-yard scoring drive capped by a 1-yard Brown TD run to go up 28-0.
Following Fiorello’s field goal, L-S took a 38-0 lead just before halftime when Howse found Fluhr on a 19-yard scoring pass.
Fiorello also starts at midfielder on the L-S boys soccer team, which is off to a 10-1-3 start.
The Pioneers’ next football game is Thursday, when they host Northern Lebanon.
