LAMPETER –With just three games remaining in the regular season Lampeter-Strasburg was determined to keep rolling.
The Pioneers did just that, defeating Elco 36-14 in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 game Friday.
| Final | |
| Lampeter | 36 |
| Elco | 14 |
Lampeter-Strasburg (5-0, 7-1) extended its winning streak to six straight to remain tied with Wyomissing (4-0, 7-0) and Twin Valley (4-0, 7-0) for first place in the section. The Spartans host the Raiders Saturday.
Colby DeJessa was heavily involved for Lampeter-Strasburg on both sides of the ball. He said it was fun being able to play a game-changing role at different positions.
“It means a lot to be able to contribute to the team in multiple ways,” DeJessa said. “It’s double as special and a great feeling.”
The Pioneers came out firing on both sides of the ball, but especially on offense.
After forcing a three-and-out by the Raiders (2-3, 3-5), Lampeter-Strasburg’s drive was capped by a 17-yard touchdown run by Cole Lopez.
On Elco’s ensuing drive, Javon Brisma blocked a punt for the Pioneers, setting the ball up at the Raiders’ 19.
The Raiders managed to stall the drive, leading to a 42-yard field goal by Peter Fiorello that put the Pioneers up 10-0 late in the first quarter.
Elco managed to put together an impressive drive to cut into its deficit. After starting at their own 27, the Raiders stormed down the field before Gavin Yeiser scored on a 3-yard run to make it 10-7.
Following a second field goal by Fiorello the Pioneers forced the first of two Elco fumbles.
Alex Salaki recovered for Lampeter-Strasburg at the Raiders’ 15.
DeJessa then scored on a 15-yard run to put the Pioneers up 19-7.
DeJessa said the inside run was working for the Pioneers, even though they were down a couple players. He said the next-man-up mentality has powered the Lampeter-Strasburg offense during this stretch.
“A lot of inside runs were working really well,” DeJessa said. “A lot of guys are hurt but we found a way. We put a lot of trust in our offensive line and our inside run today.”
After going up 19-7, the Pioneers got another stop.
With the punt incoming, Lopez had one goal in mind: taking it to the end zone. After he fielded the punt at the Pioneers’ 40, he squeezed through the pack and broke free down the left side for a 60-yard score to give Lampeter-Strasburg a 26-7 halftime lead.
In the second half the Pioneers showed no signs of letting up.
Brady Cunningham found a hole and broke away for a 28-yard touchdown run to put L-S up 36-14 in with just under six minutes to play.
On Elco’s final possession, DeJessa recovered a fumble.
He said the defense has stepped up every week to power the Pioneers’ winning streak.
“We just get better every single week,” DeJessa said. “The energy has substantially grown since the beginning of the season and I’m so proud of them.”
