Kutztown thrown for a loss by York Tech

YORK — There was no hiding the pain and anguish on the faces of the Kutztown Cougars following their game Saturday at York Tech. They knew they had let a winnable game slip through their fingers, falling 21-14 in non-league play.
“I had a bad play-calling game,” said Kutztown coach Larry Chester. “I take it all on me. It’s on my shoulders. Sometimes you have a bad game, and I had a bad game.”

The Cougars (0-2) outgained the Spartans (1-1) by a two-to-one margin; their defense registered losses on 16 plays. It was enough.
After playing the Spartans to a 7-7 halftime tie, the momentum swung in the Cougars’ favor as York Tech’s return man Joseph McCoy III fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half.

Kutztown running backs Mason Sherry and Ryan Walters, along with a personal foul on a late hit by the Spartans, positioned the Cougars deep in the red zone before Ian Bahr punched it in from 3 yards out to give Kutztown a 14-7 lead.
The Cougars looked like they could add to their advantage when they recovered an errant York Tech snap over quarterback Dominic Quintin’s head in Spartans’ territory.

The Cougars couldn’t move the ball and were forced to settle for James Undercuffler 22-yard field goal attempt. A Tech player got a piece of the ball and it glanced out on the wing, where Sterling Scarborough retrieved it and raced down the sideline for 68 yards before being brought down.
On a dime, the Spartans vanquished Kutztown’s thoughts of a two-score lead. Tech’s Serge McGill bounced off the left guard for a 20-yard touchdown run to tie the game 14-14.
The Cougars were still reeling on their next possession when they went for it on fourth-and-6 from their own 37. Tech snuffed Brenden Ackley’s reverse for a loss of 8 yards and the Cougars turned the ball over on downs, giving the Spartans a short field.

Cougars’ Ian Bahr

After a Kutztown false start gave the Spartans a first down, York Tech moved inside the 5-yard line off the arm and legs of Quintin. The sophomore play-caller hit Jahzaid Breeland with a 19-yard completion, then scrambled for 20 more.

Faced with its own fourth down, Quintin hoisted a jump ball into the end zone and Breeland came down with it for the go-ahead score.

Kutztown had two more opportunities but couldn’t find the equalizer despite moving the ball.
Running mostly out of the T-formation, Bahr led the Cougars’ ground attack with 60 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns.

Mason Sherry rumbled for 50 yards and Jayden Swoyer picked up 21.

Wyatt Stoess finished only 3-of-10 under center though he did throw for 78 yards as he connected with Colten Mathias and Ryan Walters on big gainers.

A week after Kutztown allowed 313 rushing yards in a 48-12 loss to Fleetwood, the Cougars’ defensive front played phenomenally well in holding York Tech to 111 total yards.

The Cougars dropped the Spartans behind the line of scrimmage for losses on two sacks and 14 running plays.
“We were able to come downhill and tackle in the backfield,” Sherry said. “That was really good.”
Kutztown returns home next Friday to play Octorara.
