Kutztown racked up 278 yards of offense Friday night against Octorara but four costly turnovers, including a fumble in overtime helped Octorara emerge with a 20-14 victory at Kutztown.

Kutztown led or was tied for almost the entire game after taking the opening possession 60 yards in 16 plays, ending with a Brenden Ackley 5-yard touchdown run.

The Cougars took almost eight minutes off the first quarter clock on the drive and were looking to add a second score, but Octorara’s Brayden Remphrey intercepted a Wyatt Stoess pass at the Braves 14-yard line. Following the pick, Octorara drove 86 yards in 10 plays, tying the game on a 2-yard run by Austin Kurtz.

Kutztown responded with another promising drive, but Stoess’s second interception and a long return into Kutztown territory ended the threat.

The Cougars forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession and were gifted outstanding field position at the Octorara 24-yard line after a bad punt snap resulted in an 18-yard loss for the Braves. Three plays later, Kutztown cashed in on a 1-yard Mason Sherry plunge to grab a 14-7 lead on the last play of the second quarter.

The only scoring in the second half came when Octorara received the second half kickoff and returned it 69 yards to the Kutztown 20-yard line and quickly tied the game on a 12-yard rush by Brayden Mastripolito.

In overtime, Octorara recovered a Sherry fumble on Kutztown’s only chance in the extra session and Kurtz’s second touchdown of the game, a 3-yard run, lifted the Braves to their second win of the season.

Kutztown travels to Schuylkill Valley next Friday. The Cougars lost 49-21 in last year’s meeting.
