Jven Williams again named Diamond Credit Union Lineman of the Week

Diamond Credit Union Lineman of the Week

Wyomissing football coach Bob Wolfrum says Charlie McIntyre is fast and smart, a good combination for a running back.

McIntyre was fast enough to break off an 80-yard touchdowns run in Wyomissing’s 35-14 win over Trinity Saturday and smart enough to follow the lead blocks of 6-5, 295-teammate Jven Williams whenever he could.

“He’s so fun to run behind,” said McIntyre. “I could just walk behind him. He’s putting people on the ground, sometimes two or three (at a time). He makes my job easy.”

Williams had another monstrous game in the Spartans’ latest win, springing the way for much of their 328 rushing yards and five rushing TDs.

On the Spartans’ first offensive play he was throwing blocks 20-plus yards downfield, helping Ryker Jones break off a 54-yard run (it was called back by a hold at the line of scrimmage).

That kind of effort isn’t unusual. It’s one of the reasons Penn State and numerous other college programs threw offers his way last September and it’s one of the reasons he has earned Diamond Credit Union Lineman of the Week honors once again.

Williams loves playing guard, where he gets a chance to pull and lead sweeps. McIntyre loves following him, as he did on his second touchdown Saturday, a 14-yard sweep around the right side.

“I don’t know how many people (he took out on that play),” McIntyre said, “it may have been three or four or five . . . he was just putting people to the ground..”

“It’s extremely rare to play the Lance Guard spot in Wyomissing’s offense at that size because of the amount of pulling,” said former Wyomissing and NFL offensive lineman Ross Tucker earlier this year, when Williams was selected for the MikeDragoSports.com “Starting Lineup.”

“He excels in space and on the move and that ability to demolish smaller people in an open area combined with the raw power he showcased in track make him a rare prospect,” said Tucker.

This time a year ago Williams was off the college football radar. He didn’t draw his first start until the season opener of his junior season.

After sending out a highlight video of his first three games his fortunes changed overnight. Within a few days he picked up half-a-dozen Division I offers; a few days later he got an offer from Penn State. That one resonated with him and he committed to James Franklin’s program in February.

By the end of the season Williams was the top-ranked offensive lineman in the state on many boards, and now is among the top-ranked linemen in the nation. He earned All-State honors in Class 3A as a junior, was named Berks Offensive Lineman of the Year and MikeDragoSports.com Lineman of the Year.

Williams’ selection gives the Spartans two straight Lineman of the Week honors. Last week, senior guard John Gartner was selected. Williams was selected for the weekly honor twice last year.

Players considered for Player of the Week honors are nominated by their coaches or by members of the MikeDragoSports.com coverage team.
