Jven Williams of Wyomissing is Diamond Credit Union Lineman of the Week

Diamond Credit Union Lineman of the Week

They should call Jven Williams “IHOP,” considering all the pancakes he serves up.

The 6-5, 310-pound offensive lineman was cooking Friday, throwing defenders to the ground in leading Wyomissing to a 41-21 victory over top-ranked Southern Columbia.

“He put a few guys out of bounds,” said Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrum of the junior guard, who has earned Diamond Credit Union Lineman of the Week honors.

Williams was credited with six “pancake” blocks — essentially leaving a defender flat as a pancake — in a victory that snapped the nation’s longest winning streak.

He has collected 10 Division I offers– Rutgers and Boston College are the latest — and showed why as he paved the way for the Spartans’ effective tosses and sweep, which led to 337 rushing yards against a team that hadn’t lost a home game in seven years.

“We got outside of them a bunch, ran a bunch of quick pitches, which we hadn’t run a whole lot this season,” said Wolfrum. “We were pulling two (linemen).”

Williams was a dominating force, clearing the way for Avery Thompson’s 41-yard TD run and an 82-yard scoring run from Charlie McIntyre later in the game.

“He’s pretty impressive coming around the corner,” Wolfrum said. “He can move. Sometimes the big guys have trouble making contact out in the open like that, but he doesn’t. Any time you have a big guy that can do the normal (blocking) things but can also pull and get down field, that’s impressive.”

Williams mostly plays guard, though he sometimes switches to tackle. In Wyomissing’s blocking system, which has guards and tackles line up left or right of the center, depending on the play call, teams never know which direction Williams will be coming from.

Williams also plays tackle for a Spartans defense that has been dominating at times this season. They’re allowing a Berks-low 11.7 points per game.

Williams burst onto the national recruiting scene late last month, picking up eight major offers in the span of a week, including one from Penn State. He also has drawn offers from Michigan, Maryland, Illinois and Virgina, among others.
