It’s another national award for Nick Singleton
He’s been a college student now for several weeks but Nick Singleton is still collecting awards for his record-setting high school football career.
The Gov. Mifflin running back Thursday was named the Maxwell Football Club’s national high school Offensive Player of the Year.
It is the third national award for the Penn State freshman, who was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year in December and the Adidas All-American Bowl Offensive Player of the Year earlier this month.
This is the 15th year of the Maxwell Football Club high school awards, and the fifth in which both offensive and defensive players were recognized. Singleton is the first from Penn State to earn the award.
Cade Klubnik, a Clemson quarterback recruit, and Tetairoa McMillan, an Arizona wide receiver recruit, were the other finalists for the award.
Past winners of the Offensive Player award include Ty Thompson of Oregon, Bryce Young of Alabama, Bru McCoy of Southern Cal and Trevor Lawrence of Clemson.
Singleton will be honored March 18 at the 85th Maxwell Football Club National Awards Gala, in Atlantic City.
He enrolled at Penn State earlier this month, after appearing in the All-American Bowl in San Antonio.
Singleton became just the third Berks back to top 2,000 rushing yards in a season when he ran for 2,059 yards and scored 44 touchdowns for the Mustangs in 11 games. He averaged 12.7 yards per carry.
Berks’ previous 2,000-yard rushers were David Gilmore of Central Catholic, in 1983, and Fleetwood’s Tyler Emge, in 2014. Singleton’s 6,326 career yards are more than 1,500 more than any Berks player.
