Hamburg came up empty as Annville-Cleona rolled up 359 rushing yards in a 42-0 Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 5 victory at Hawks Stadium Friday. It was the league opener for both.
Things got out of hand in a hurry for Hamburg (1-3) as it fell into a quick 21-point hole in the first quarter. Two of the first three Annville-Cleona (3-1) touchdowns came on one-play drives: A 52-yard reverse pass to James Garney from wide receiver Jonathan Moran and a 61-yard run by Devon Englehart.

Hamburg’s only real threat of the first half was thwarted by the Dutchmen on a fourth-and-goal stop at the 6-yard line.
The Dutchmen opened the second half with a 10-play drive. Englehart’s second touchdown rush of the night capped it.
The Hawks allowed another Dutchmen touchdown, plus a Pick-Six by junior Jaylynn Moyer.
It did not seem to matter who the Dutchmen handed the ball to. Three of their ballcarriers rushed for at least 90 yards. The Dutchmen offensive line dominated, moving the line of scrimmage over and over.
The Hawks were never able to find a rhythm on offense, compiling only 60 yards through the air on five completions.
They were forced to punt five times and turned the ball over twice. The Dutchmen defense swarmed to the ball, never allowing any room for the backs of Hamburg to operate with.
Despite the defensive struggles the Hawks were able to force three turnovers, all fumbles. However, they failed to turn any of them into points.
Dropped passes still haunt the Hawks. As they fell behind quickly, they were forced into opting for the passing game more often. Freshman quarterback Isaac McFadden completed just 4-of-18 passes.
With lead running back Blaise Ernst still out they’ve gone to sophomore Bryce Schmeck, who took the bulk of the carries. He ran 10 times for just 28 yards.
McFadden left the game midway through the fourth quarter with an apparent injury.
Star of the Game
Annville-Cleona’s Devon Englehart seemed unstoppable. Highlighted by his 61-yard touchdown, he ran for 159 yards.
Key statistic
Seven of Hamburg’s drives ended in three-and-outs.
Quotable
“I thought we lacked focus and that ultimately comes back on me. I thought we lacked focus on executing the game plan . . . in our ability to make plays. We had six or seven drops, trying to sustain drives.” – Hamburg coach Tyler Hartranft.
Quotable
“We are banged up in the running game. Arguably our best football player (Blaise Ernst) got hurt in Week 2. Our backup running back broke his collar bone in a scrimmage. We converted Bryce Schmeck from our fullback/tight end position. We’re trying to generate what we can in our running game.” – Hamburg coach Tyler Hartranft
Quotable
“We got some young guys in there towards the end and they made some plays. Defensively we got banged up a little bit and put some young guys in there; I thought they answered pretty well. They didn’t back down. As a football team in general, we just have to continue to get tougher. We need to do the little things better.” – Hamburg coach Tyler Hartranft
