Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week
Tyler Shuey is listed on the Hamburg roster at 5-10, shorter than most high school quarterbacks and roughly seven inches less than the guy he’s replacing, Xander Menapace.
That was never an issue for Hawks coach Matt Hoffert during the offseason quarterback competition. He has been impressed with the way Shuey went about winning the starting quarterback job and was confident he would perform well under the lights.
“He does a great job of moving his feet around,” Hoffert said of Shuey, regarding his height. “Xander could see over everybody. Tyler finds the (passing) windows and moves himself around.”
Shuey showed why he earned the starting nod, throwing four touchdown passes and running for two others in a 49-19 season-opening win over Halifax Friday. He passed for 356 yards, the second-highest total in program history and more than enough to earn the season’s inaugural Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week award.

“He’s looked really good in practice for the last couple of weeks,” said Hoffert. “He looks like a leader on the field.”
Shuey completed 10-of-15 passes Friday, throwing TD passes of 87, 27 and 54 yards to Ty Werley and a 71-yard scoring pass to Mason Semmel.
He also ran five times for a team-leading 72 yards, with scoring runs of 23 and 12 yards. When the quarterback competition began Hoffert wasn’t expecting Shuey to be so effective running with the ball.
“I was surprised at how well he pulled the ball and ran with it in our option game (in the scrimmage),” Hoffert said. “Ty picked up a step (in speed) this summer.”
In the passing game Shuey connected with Werley five times, helping him smash the program record for receiving yards in a game, with 253. That’s the fourth-highest total in Berks history; Schuylkill Valley’s Dave Golden set the record with 271 yards (against Hamburg) in 1984.
“The connection with all the receivers is great,” said Shuey. “We’re all close, we always have been close, but today (Werley) was getting open.”
Werley had 35 receptions last season, third-most in Berks.
More than his passing and running effectiveness, the thing Hoffert has liked most about Shuey is the leadership role he has assumed.
“He never looked at it as a competition, and that’s what I like about it,” Hoffert said. “He went right in and acted like he was going to be the starter. Xander was our coach on the field; Ty’s been doing that. It’s amazing to see from a guy who hasn’t had a lot of reps.”
Shuey attempted just two passes last season as a sophomore; the majority of his playing time came at linebacker.
