The Hamburg Hawks lost an opponent and replaced them within hours Wednesday, assuring that they’ll have a game this week.
Hamburg officials were informed early Wednesday that Fairfield did not have enough healthy players to compete in Friday’s scheduled non-league game at Hawk Hill.
Hamburg athletic director Aaron Menapace quickly secured a game against Eastern York, which had been looking for a Week 3 opponent. The game will be played at Hamburg at 7.
Menapace was told that Fairfield, a Class 1A school which competes in Division III of the York Adams League, expected to have only 14 players available for a game Friday due to a COVID situation at the school, injuries, and other illnesses.
Eastern York is a Class 4A school and will provide a sterner test for the Hawks, who have won their first two games convincingly, and by a combined 123-27 score. They scored a program-record 75 points last week against Warrior Run.
Prep for the game will be a little easier for the Hamburg staff because Fairfield played Eastern last week and the Hawks’ coaches have already viewed that film. Eastern won 24-7 last week after a 34-7 loss to Columbia in Week 1.
