Gov. Mifflin senior running back Nick Singleton is the inaugural Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week.
Hardly a surprise.
The Penn State recruit is considered one of the best backs in the nation and showed why in his season debut, rushing for a career-high 281 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-6 thrashing of York High.
“He’s one of a kind,” said Mifflin head coach Jeff Lang. “He’s just strong, powerful and fast. We’ve got some unfinished business as a team, and so does he.”
Singleton went for 1,303 yards and scored 24 touchdowns in eight games as the Mustangs went 8-1 and reached the PIAA Class 5A semifinals (their district final against Warwick was a forfeit victory).
He has rushed for 4,548 career yards, 230 short of the Berks record. His 77 career touchdowns are two short of the record.
Singleton’s five TDs came on runs of 8, 8, 50, 32 and 70.
The 50-yarder came just before halftime. Mifflin called a timeout with 17 seconds left. It ran an option left. Singleton took the pitch near the midfield strip and showed off his speed, racing past the Bearcats and into the end zone.
Early in the second half he showed off his power, lowering his shoulder and running through two defenders on a fourth-and-6 to gain the first down.
“I have always been impressed that when our backs are against the wall, he can take the ball and make a play like that,” Lang said.
It was the third time Singleton has scored five TDs in a game; he did it twice as a sophomore, against Reading High and Muhlenberg.
The 281 yards ranks as the second-highest in program history, behind only Dustin Manz’ 352 yards against Conestoga Valley in 2006. Singleton’s previous best was 248 yards last season against Exeter.
