Gov. Mifflin to play state-ranked Harrisburg Friday after Cedar Crest drops out

Gov. Mifflin’s Week 4 game just got a whole lot more interesting.

The Mustangs will now play unbeaten and state-ranked Harrisburg after school officials were informed that Cedar Crest can not play the game originally scheduled for Friday at Mifflin Stadium.

Gov. Mifflin athletic director Pat Tulley sent out an email today informing the media of the switch, and said in a later email that Cedar Crest is “shutting down” its football team for a few days.

Cedar Crest athletic director Rick Dissinger said his football team canceled its trip to Mifflin “out of an abundance of caution and due to COVID related issues.”

Tulley said Gov. Mifflin was informed of the change by Cedar Crest earlier Wednesday.

Harrisburg is 3-0 after beating Manheim Township 20-17 in overtime Saturday.

Harrisburg was scheduled to play Central Dauphin this week; the Rams were forced to bow out of a game for the second straight week. They were supposed to play Manheim Township last week.

The Cougars were scheduled to play Bishop McDevitt last week, but that game fell through when McDevitt bowed out due to COVID issues.

Harrisburg is ranked No. 9 in the state in Class 6A.

The Mustangs are 3-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 5A.

Cedar Crest is 2-1 after losing to Carlisle 45-0 last week. It opened with wins over Lebanon and Gettysburg.

Central Dauphin has played two game and now has just eight games scheduled; it will have play a minimum of six games, according to PIAA rules, to qualify for the district playoffs.

Numerous games across District 3, and the state, have been postponed or canceled the first month of the season due to COVID issues.
