Complete series: Good things come in threes

Three-sport athletes used to be commonplace at the high school level.

Not so much anymore. Longer seasons that overlap, the desire for specialization, the growth of club teams and the AAU circuit, and chasing college scholarships has led many top athletes to focus on a single sport.

That’s not always the best thing, for the athlete or the sport. Young student-athletes can get burned out by playing the same sport 12 months a year. And that can lead to injuries, also.

Many coaches and trainers will tell you that playing different sports throughout the year helps both the body and the mind.

The athletes will tell you that, too.

Starting Monday, MikeDragoSports.com takes a look at some of the top three-sport athletes in Berks County in a seven-part series.

You can read profiles of Twin Valley’s Ean Winchester, Wyomissing’s Audrey Hurleman, Hamburg’s Mason Semmel, Conrad Weiser’s Evan Miller and others and learn why they continue to play multiple sports.

We’ll kick off the series Monday with Hamburg’s Mia Gassert, one of the top tennis players in Berks who also loves her other sports just as much and isn’t about to give them up.

Monday: Mia Gassert, Hamburg

Tuesday: Devin Garcia, Berks Catholic

Wednesday: Audrey Hurleman, Wyomissing

Thursday: Evan Miller, Conrad Weiser

Friday: Ean Winchester, Twin Valley

Saturday: Mason Semmel, Hamburg

Sunday: Logan Hyde, Wyomissing
