Former Exeter QB Gavin McCusker earns NEC honors

Exeter grad Gavin McCusker, a redshirt freshman at Merrimack University, has been named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week after throwing for 163 yards in a 28-21 win over Duquesne Saturday.

McCusker completed 13-of-20 passes with a touchdown and a season-high yardage total. His 20-yard TD pass to Hayden Fisher with 4:45 remaining in the third quarter gave the Warriors their first lead at 21-14.

The 6-2, 185-pound McCusker is completing 50.8 percent of his passes this season for 437 yards and three TDs in five games.

McCusker has started the last three games, all wins for the Warriors (4-2). He threw a pair of TDs in a 24-23 win over Long Island University Oct. 1 and threw for 124 yards in his first start, a 28-21 win at Delaware State.

McCusker was a two-time all-league pick at Exeter where he set program single-season records with 2,035 passing yards and 24 TD passes. He finished his career with 3,416 passing yards.

Former Exeter teammate Ty Yocum, a true freshman, has seen time in two games for Merrimack.

The Warriors played Wagner College Saturday at 1.
